couch collection

We bought some furniture from Macy’s just like real adults do. Its all a part of the wedded bliss I am living in. It is strange to have nice stuff (that looks kinda out of place next to my cruddy stuff), as most of my life I have had whatever I could find in yuppy trash, or was handed down or bought cheaply made of pine without paint. I have come a long way since my first apartment. I was 15, and lived in an attic in Trenton. Three college guys were my roommates. They thought I was a college student as I drove a car, and worked at the radio station WTSR (the radio station only checked my FCC licence not my school ID). They had a stop sign on top of a keg as a table; I had a jar of peanut butter and a loaf of bread in my cabinet for the week. It was a lifetime ago. I couch surfed for years too between tours, a year on Alison’s leather couch, a couple on Josh’s white couch. I should have taken a photo of all of them, my couch collection. It is nice to have one of my own to offer now.The movers were idiots. I handed them a tube of Neosporin before they left because the scratched themselves up so bad. They busted my front door. Tonight Tom and I sat on our new couch and watched John from Cincinnati. Man it makes me miss Joe Strummer every time I hear the opening song. When I was very pregnant I rented the entire season of Deadwood and got really into it. John from Cincinnati has the same writer (David Milch). I would sit on the floor and try and think laborsome thoughts as I watched it. I couldn’t sit on our old couch. It was red, and was a lap and a half deep and you would sink into it. As a pregnant lady with two babies pressing up against my ribs, I couldn’t breathe when I sat on it and couldn’t get up without help. I hated that thing. Its the second red couch that was sawed in half and left on the curb in Park Slope. When I moved into my old place, my first red couch wouldn’t fit into the door of the lower brownstone apartment (free couches galore on the first of the month in that neighborhood). The movers took it to Tom’s then batchelor pad instead but couldn’t get it in that door either. Tom’s roommate Jim and him squeezed it in by breaking the back of it, so that it always curved a little. They sawed it in half when Tom moved in with me. They ought to have a TV show those two.Our couch is kinda retro 50’s and ocean blue (but looks nothing like the color blue that the ocean really is). The ass and a half chair we bought also is white (um…with babies? good thinkin’ eh?). Gone are the overstuffed red couch days. Next project is to find something to hold all of our records, something we can babyproof, they will be mobile soon, they are already rolling everywhere. I made Tom keep the butterfly chair, cuz Marlowe looks so cute in it.
