a patch of pickled peppers

Tom & I went to the community garden near our house today. The babies were able to touch things (lambs ear, a tomato, mint, cosmos, fennel, peppers, sunflower leaves…). Marlowe grabbed fistfulls of grass, she could have mowed the place if we let her. Jack liked to koi fish in the pond, he is all into fish like his Dad. They slept like rocks when they got home. It must be amazing to see, hear and smell things for the first time. We are going to volunteer there, I can see J & M running around there with one of the mini wheelbarrows next year. The F train runs underneath, it is part of land not used by the city when they cleared it all but then decided to run it underground. So every 5 minutes or so, you hear the rumble below. But its a patch of green in the city. I love Prospect Park, but on the weekends it is like having a barbeque with 2,000 of your closest friends. This is small and gated (but open to the public) and everyone is so nice, its amazing that its in Brooklyn. There is an apple tree, and some members make wine from the apples and everyone drinks it at the end of the year barbeque. Looking forward to that. Its strange to be a part of a community, or want to be. I am sure we are not all like minded, I can’t imagine we will be discussing much politics, but we can all appreciate a really nice pepper or two while slightly pickled.

I wish we had something like that in my part of town, maybe I should get something started. Downtown Toronto has more of the community gardens than uptown.

When you say “Its strange to be a part of a community, or want to be”, that’s how I feel about this part of TO we have chosen as temp digs until we find a more perm place. I don’t want to set down roots because I don’t want the urge to stay here.
